Watermelon Poems and Songs

Watermelon
Time
Now
watermelon time is here.
And when the day
Is warm and clear,
Our uncle thumps
The green balloon
And says it's ripe
And very soon
A splash of pink
Comes into view.
We know exactly
What to do.
We take a bit.
We take a bite.
We eat and eat
And taste the summer,
Pink
and sweet.

Down
By The Bay
Down
by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say,
"Did you ever see a bear
Combing his hair?"
Down by the bay.

Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say,
"Did you ever see a bee
With a sunburned knee?"
Down by the bay.

Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say,
"Did you ever see a moose
Kissing a goose?"
Down by the bay.

Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say,
"Did you ever see a whale
With a polka dot tail?"

The Watermelon Patch Song
Sung to: "Are you Sleeping?"
Watermelon, (Make a circle with your arms.)
Watermelon,
On the vine, (Curve hands and arms beside body.)
On the vine,
Sweet and red and juicy, (Rub your tummy.)
Sweet and red and juicy,
Please be mine! (Palms together as though pleading.)
Please be mine!
Watermelon, (Make a circle with your arms.)
Watermelon,
Thump, thump, thump, (Make a thumping movement with thumb
and middle finger.)
Thump, thump, thump,
I think you are ready- (Point, resting finger on your
temple.)
I think you are ready-
Big and plump! (Make a circle with your arms.)
Bug and plump!

The Watermelon Chant
First
you plant a seed and it grows. It grows.
It really, really grows.
Then
you pick the melon. You pick it. You pick it.
You really, really pick it.
Now
it's time to slice it, to slice it.
You really, really slice it.
Then
it's time to eat it, to eat it.
You really, really eat it.

Who Took the Melon From the Melon Patch?
Who

Who me?
Yes you!
Couldn't be!
Then who?
____________ took the melon from the melon patch!
(Repeat the rhyme until each student has had a chance to be
named.)

Watermelon Song
(tune: Are You Sleeping?)
Watermelon,
watermelon
See how it drips, see how it drips
Up and down my elbow, up and down my elbow
Spit out the pits (POOEY!), Spit out the pits (POOEY!)

Watermelon Echo Song
(Sung to: "Frere Jacques")
Oh No (Oh No)
I just swallowed ( I just swallowed)
A watermelon seed ( a watermelon seed)
Will I grow a watermelon. ( will I grow a watermelon)
Deep in me? (deep in me?)
Oh no (Oh No)
that seed won't grow (that seed won't grow)
In my tummy (in my tummy)
There's no rain or sunshine (there's no rain or sunshine)
deep in me (deep in me)

Picking Up Watermelons
(Sung to: "The Paw Paw Patch")
Pick up a watermelon, put it in the basket,
Pick up a watermelon, put it in the basket,
Pick up a watermelon, put it in the basket,
Way down yonder in the watermelon patch.
(Have the children pretend to pick up watermelons and place them
in a basket
while singing the song).
