Goals for  Literacy Centers 
1. To give children a chance to make their own choices.
2. To allow children to work at their own rate of speed.
3. To provide a wide variety of activities for the children to complete.
4. To include both small group activities and individual activities.
5. To provide activities that meet the varying abilities of the students.
6. To give children a chance to work independently.
7. To encourage children to try new things.

 In my classroom, I have these centers available during my guided reading groups.

 
Computer Center
Our computer will be used 
for beginning word 
processing, Riverdeep,
and educational software.
 


Listening Center
Children will choose books
with tapes.

Reading Center
Children will independently
choose books. 


Math Center
-Number stencils

Writing Center
-Unlined & Lined Paper
-Various writing instruments
-Stencils-alphabet, numbers, animals

-Rhyming Word Cards 
- Cut-up sentences with an example
of original sentence to re-create

-ABC flash cards -Capital/Lower Case for matching letters and sorting

Art Center
- Playdough letters 
-Students write letters,
words in shaving cream or sand

Literacy Tubs
-Magnetic letters to sort according
to capital/lowercase,
letters in child's name

-Poetry/songs on charts
-Copies of text for
 individual books
