On the first day of school, I take each child's picture and get double prints made.
I save one picture for open house with this poem:
There are so many stars, There are so many trees,
There are so many buildings, There are so many bees.
There are so many cars, Many fish in the sea,
But in all the world, There is only one ME!

I save the other for the last days of school parent folder.
I put the children's first day and end of the year picture on card stock with this poem:
Here is a picture that you can treasure.
Teaching you has been a pleasure!
The year now ends, and we must part,
Always know you are in my heart!

It is amazing to see how the children have grown!

First Day of School Handprints
Here are my hands with ten fingers in all.
My first mark in school to hang on the wall.
As years go by, I’ll remember and say,
”My hands and I had a great first day.”

"All About Me" book
Take a picture of each child. Put their picture on the top of the page.
Have them complete the following information:
1. This is my name.
2. This is me. (Children draw their self-portrait.)
3. This is my handprint.
4. This is my family.
5. This is my school Hagood Elementary School.
6. This is my teacher, Mrs. LaBoon. (I love to see my portrait!)
7.
My favorite color is _________.
8.My favorite food is __________.
9.My pet is a _________.
10.My favorite book is _________.
11.My favorite song is _________.
12. I am special because __________________.
Put the children's pages together to make a book. Let one child take the book
home each evening and share it with their families.

Hall Chants
I'm giving myself a great big hug,
I'm standing straight and tall,
I'm looking right ahead of me,
I'm ready for the hall.

On our Ellison machine, I cut out a handprint. I glue it on card stock and put on
a magnetic back. The card will always be on the chalkboard and when the children
are too noisy, not paying attention, etc. I hold the "Give Me Five" card up.
It doesn't take them long to know what it means. Even if we're too noisy
when walking down the hall, I'll say, "Give Me Five."

Give Me Five
Eyes are watching
Ears are listening
Mouth is quiet
Hands are to myself
Hearts are caring

"Believe It or Not, I Was Once a Kindergartener"
Send home a letter asking each parent to think of something they remember about
being in kindergarten. Ask them to draw a picture and write a short story
about their experience. Put the pages together to make a book
for your classroom library.

Graphs
Get to know each other and develop math skills by creating class graphs.
You might make a graph of how children get to school, the number of brothers and
sisters they have, pets, favorite pizza topping, and so forth.

On our first day of school, we take a tour of our school. I take my camera
along and make pictures of all our school helpers, special rooms, and outdoor pictures.
I use the pictures to make a class book. This is the song we sing while reading the book:
School Song
To help children learn the name of their school, principal, teacher, etc.
teach them this song to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus."

The name of my school is (school name), (school name), (school name).
The name of my school is (school name). That's the name of my school.
The name of my teacher is...
The name of my principal is...
The name of my assistant principal is...
